History
Overview

Behind good leadership and guidance of an active Board of Directors, our membership has increased from 30 in 1946 to nearly 1,800 today. We have expanded from the original three programs to a wide variety of social, educational and athletic programs.  Community volunteers and financial support continue to be an essential component of the growth of this organization!

History of the OGRCC

In 1943, as a result of war restrictions, teenagers didn’t have recreational programs and facilities which were accessible.  To solve this problem, a small group of citizens in Old Greenwich and Riverside together with members of First Congregational Church, launched a small recreational program for teens in town.   They offered dances, Saturday morning movies, and athletic programs.

Then in 1946, Club Shangri-La and Binney Bruins continued to grow.

The original name of the OGRCC was under the council name of Club Shangri-La and Binney Bruins. Activities were carried out in Binney Memorial Parish House with more than 30 members.  Community financial support and volunteers begin to really grow the organization.

It soon became evident that they needed more than just a few volunteers and undefined financial help.  They were also outgrowing their space.   The council decided to ask for help from the Community Chest so that they could hire an executive director and find a space to rent for a community club room.

In 1946, our organization was established as the Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center and is admitted as a member of the Community Chest.

In 1947, there were three athletic programs and about 150 members.  The Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center established a club room at our current location – Eastern Civic Center

Our popular community Sailboat regatta at Binney Park was introduced in 1962.  This event continues to be a great annual event.

We are excited to continue to strive to grow our membership and continue to be a valuable part of the Greenwich community.
