Greenwich Men’s Rugby fell to Saratoga over the weekend up in Saratoga Springs with a final score 27-30 in the last seconds of the match. The boys had a slow start and looked sluggish in the first half after a three-hour drive upstate, limping into halftime with a score of 5-17. In the second half, the veteran players led by example and showed much intensity, dotting down several tries in the process. As the clock ticked down and the score tied 27-27, a careless penalty by Greenwich in the lineout allowed Saratoga to convert a penalty kick for 3 additional points. It was a tough loss. Our team outscored Saratoga by two tries but were unsuccessful with the conversion kicks and were missing some key players. Ultimately, the team played with plenty of heart and look forward to a rematch in October with home-field advantage.
Coach Pazio is optimistic despite the loss since the team was able to salvage two bonus points in the standings (one for losing within 7 points and another for scoring four or more tries). Jason Keller (inside center), Carlos Martinez (outside center) and Daniel Gil (number 8) each scored a try while Kevin Morgan (scrumhalf) scored twice.
Next up, Greenwich hosts Danbury at home on September 14, 1 pm kickoff at Stanwich School. The team is looking for a win after a close loss to Danbury in the playoffs last season. The match will undoubtedly be a battle until the very end.
