Greenwich Men’s Rugby defeated White Plains D3 over the weekend with a final score 64-14 at Fox Lane High School. Scrumhalf Kevin Morgan scored a try within the first three minutes of the match followed by a try by outside center Carlos Martinez in minute 5. White Plains was able to regain composure for a few phases and the teams were deadlocked in midfield with advantage switching back and forth. At minute 21, White Plains capitalized off a lazy defensive play by Greenwich and entered the try zone followed by another try a few minutes later which briefly gave them the lead with score 12-14. It was very short-lived. Flanker Conner “T-Bone” Buck pounded in a try off a pick-and-go and from there, Greenwich was off to the races. The men of the match were Kevin Morgan with 4 tries and Carlos Martinez with 2 tries, one of which involved chasing his own kick, making a tackle and dotting down the loose ball in the try zone.

Despite the win, Greenwich did not perform well structurally or defensively, relying mostly on fitness and huge runs by the backline – the team will need to clean it up for any hope of a deep playoff push. At Tuesday’s training session, the team worked on the defensive line and rucks with hopes to carry these skills into the match this weekend. Greenwich will travel to Long Island on Saturday to face off against Suffolk Bull Moose.
