Meet Our Director

YUKI – DIRECTOR OF SANDPIPERS

Welcome to Sandpipers Beach Camp 2024!
My name is Yuki Ikeda, and I am the Camp Director for OGRCC’s Sandpipers Beach Camp. For the last 12+ years, Sandpipers has been a big part of my life. I started as a camper for several fun-filled summers, which then became a counselor position to being the first aid director and directing the camp I have grown to adore. The camp’s core has stayed the same as its roots which originated back in the ’70s by the camp founder Sally Love. Our camp’s philosophy is for the children to have fun and enjoy the outdoors of Tod’s Point (Greenwich Beach). Nature Walks, Sand Castle Competitions, to Tie Dye remain fully intact with the addition of fun, action-packed sessions.
I am thrilled to have returning campers as well as new campers.
Looking forward to meeting everyone this Summer 2024!
Sincerely,
Yuki Ikeda
Camp Director

What are the camp hours? 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Monday – Thursday) *Friday is rain makeup

Where is pick up and drop off? Camp pick up and drop off is in the picnic area right behind the main concession stand at Tod’s Point.  See this map for reference.

When can I drop my child off? You may begin dropping your children off at 9:00 am. Please do not drop your children off prior as counselors will be setting up camp as there will be limited supervision.

When can I pick up my children? Pick-up is at 3:00 pm SHARP. There will be a $15.00 late fee for any campers that are picked up after 3:15 PM.

What do I do at drop off or pick up?  All children must be registered with Sandpipers Beach Camp to participate in the activities.  All children must be signed in and out by the same Parent/Legal Guardian or authorized persons over the age of 18. For the safety of the child, there are no exceptions to this rule.

What do I do if I need to pick up my child early? Preferably the best time to pick up your child early is at lunch, as campers will be spread throughout Tod’s Point during the day. If you need to pick your child up earlier in the day, please let the camp director and your child’s counselor know.

Why is there a rain make-up day? Our camp is held strictly outdoors, and if it rains heavily, we will determine whether or not to cancel camp.

How do we know if camp is canceled? The camp director will determine by 8am whether camp is canceled due to rain.  All registered campers will receive updated communications from their CommunityPass account should camp be canceled.  To ensure you are receiving all communications, please follow these instructions.

What happens if it rains during camp? If it rains lightly, camp will still resume. If rain persists and is heavy, or if there is lighting, the Camp Director will assess the situation and make a determination whether to cancel camp. At this point, a message from CommunityPass will be sent to all registered participants, and counselors will additionally attempt to contact parents/guardians to come and pick their children up.

We ask that all parents sign up for the text alerts. Click here to learn more.

Are there refunds for bad weather? The OGRCC does not provide refunds for weather related issues.  The camp runs 4-days each week with Friday as a makeup (except for week 2 of Session 1).  If camp is canceled more than one day each week, refunds are not provided.

I am concerned about my children’s safety in the water, what are the guidelines? We have two designated camp lifeguards who are always down at the water. The town also provides their own set of lifeguards. Additionally, each age group will have 1 additional counselor trained in water safety. The camp lifeguard will assess the child’s swimming ability. For the younger children, they will not be allowed to go in the water past their waist.

Could you tell us more about general beach protocols?

Every morning the lifeguards on duty will designate a spot on the beach for the campers; that spot will be roped off.  The campers will not be able to pass that section without adult supervision. All children must come down to the beach. At the beach, the children can go into the water up to their waist for safety purposes. We also have head counts and buddy checks. There will be 1 counselor from each group in the water as well as 2 lifeguards to ensure the safety of the kids in the water, and 1 counselor from each group on the sand for the children that want to stay on the sand, bathroom breaks, etc.

What is the bathroom protocol? All campers must be potty trained. Campers age 3 – 7 will go to the bathroom under the supervision of counselor(s). Older children age 8 & up may go to the bathroom but only with a buddy.

What is the sunscreen/bug repellent protocol? Only those parents who have given the counselors permission will have their children reapplied with sunscreen. (Please provide your child with proper sunscreen, the counselors will only use the sunscreen that you have provided) Bug repellent is provided by the camp and the tables and camp areas are sprayed down prior to the start of camp.

Are lunch/refreshments provided? No, please pack your child a lunch. Must be in ziplock bags with their name on it. No lunch boxes as we store the lunches in cooler boxes which are mandated by the state of Connecticut. We do not have enough space for lunch boxes.

Can my child purchase items at the concession stand? No, we kindly ask children to refrain from purchasing items at the concession stand.

What is your cancelation and refund policy? All refund/cancellations requests must be made by April 1. There will be a $15.00 transaction fee for refunds, or you can opt for a full OGRCC credit.

What is your transfer policy? All transfer requests must be made 2 weeks in advance of the start of the session your child is attending. If there are openings in the session you are wanting to transfer to we will be able to make this change.

What is the friend request policy? Only 1 friend request per child and these must be submitted in writing to yuki@myogrcc.org These friend requests are NOT GUARANTEED. Children must be similar in age.

“I’m really impressed with the organization and the staff. My daughter went to three sessions. Her counselor Lexi was amazing and everybody was always very sweet to her. I loved her summer camp and will definitely enroll her next summer.”
