Youth Officials Program
Overview

We are thrilled to offer our youth members a chance to participate in our youth officials programs. Becoming an official early in life can be a foundation for future responsibilities.  The work is challenging and rewarding and can keep a person involved in a sport they love well beyond their playing years. It is also an opportunity to earn money or obtain community service volunteer hours.

Youth officials begin working in the recreational league. Recreational soccer referees referee games 1st – 5th grade. Recreational baseball umpires ump games 3rd – 5th grade – modified kid pitch. As our officials get older, we can direct you to obtain certification which qualifies you to work travel games.

Why Should You Get Involved?

  • Builds Character – This a fantastic opportunity to take on a job with a lot of responsibility. It requires dedication and commitment.
  • Valuable Contacts – You will regularly engage with coaches, parents, and staff.
  • Keep Active and Involved – Get outside and involved in the community.
  • Financially Rewarding – Our programs allow youth to make money weekly.

Please click the tabs below to learn about each program and how to get involved. Thank you.

Overview – Recreational Soccer

The recreational soccer referee program runs in the Fall & Spring. Referees participate in 1st to 5th-grade co-ed and girls-only rec. soccer games. These games are typically held at Binney Park and Eastern Civic Center on Saturdays. Time varies by age group and depends on the season, but the time commitment is usually 3-4 hours. As a youth referee, you can sign up week by week. This program is not a season-long weekly commitment.

Age Requirements:

State law requires that the OGRCC first hire members who are 14 years and older. If there are not enough 14 years and older, we will select 13 and 12-year-olds. Do not take it personally if you are 12 or 13 years old and not selected. Please keep signing up.

Payment or Volunteering Hours:

Payment is $15 per hour and includes set up and between game time. Instead of a salary, you can receive volunteer credit for high school community service requirements. You must indicate whether you prefer payment or volunteer hours when you sign up. A W2 form will be provided and must be filled out to receive compensation. Click to download the W9 – fw9

Items Needed to Referee

All youth referees will receive an OGRCC referee T-shirt and a whistle. Please arrange a time to pick it up at the OGRCC office. In addition, we ask that you bring a stopwatch. Please do not use your phone as a stopwatch!

How to Sign Up?

The first step is to email David Rafferty – aidansdad1@mac.com. You can indicate weeks that you are available and interested in refereeing.

What Happens Next?

On the Monday before the Saturday games, Mr. Rafferty sends a mass email to all prospective referees asking them to respond by 5 pm Thursday with whether or not they can work that Saturday. Thursday afternoon, Mr. Rafferty selects the refs and responds via email to those selected. NOTE: the earlier you respond, the higher the chance of being selected for the week. If you do not hear from him, you have not been selected. If selected, we expect you will be there and on time. If you cannot make the game, PLEASE let Mr. Rafferty know as soon as you do so he may find a replacement. The worst thing you can do is take an assignment and not show up.
